A one-way degassing valve is effectively mandatory: it releases CO₂ without admitting oxygen. Barrier choice sets the ceiling - foil laminate at OTR under 0.5 cc/m²/day supports a 12-18 month shelf life, while a polyethylene structure at OTR ≈2-4 gives roughly 8-10 weeks even with a valve. A valve on a low-barrier pouch does not solve oxidation, and high-barrier foil without degassing does not solve pressure stress. Both decisions have to be made together.

Kraft paper and plastic film are the two most common exteriors; both can be laminated with a foil lining for longer shelf life. Commonly run at 5-6 mil in stock ranges for an earthy retail feel.

Breaks down in INDUSTRIAL composting in roughly 90-180 days. Certified to ASTM D6400 and EN 13432. Industrial facility access is regional - confirm before making a claim on-pack.
